5 Disaster Recovery Tips To Keep Your Company From Playing Reindeer Games This Winter
1. Take the planning process seriously and involve your staff.
Disaster recovery planning should involve your entire company. Everyone is responsible for recovery when your organization is suffering so use their knowledge and assistance to create a plan that everyone can use. Start by evaluating your network to identify and list the equipment you currently have in the office. Don’t worry, your disaster recovery plan doesn’t have to be a novel. Just a few pages to reference with the proper information so everyone can clearly see what to do when things don’t go as planned.
2. Put automatic offsite backups in place and check them regularly.
One of the biggest issues with back-ups is inconsistency. Now that we mention this, many of you may be wondering if your back-ups actually completed last night. Do you know if everything you really need is being backed-up? Have you recently tried to recover a file from your back-ups? If you answered no to any of these questions, you know where to start. Your recovery is reliant on the data available to restore your systems.
3. Limit your plan to response actionsyour company needs for a smooth recovery.
Your disaster recovery plan should outline step-by-step the priority level for restoration of each of your essential systems. For example, power, telephones, and Internet are generally the top three items to restore. Include the proper contacts to call in your action items along with pertinent information like your account number, full service address, or account representative name if applicable.
4. Disaster recovery plan components.
Now that you’ve evaluated your equipment, worked through your action items, it’s time to put everything together. Your disaster recovery plan should include the following sections:
  • List emergency instructions so your staff can take action right away to restore operations.
  • A checklist to document the steps taken for easy hand-off should multiple staff members need to work on the recovery efforts.
  • A full contact list for provider support. Include the power company, your Internet Service Provider, telephone support, Internet provider, and most importantly your network support specialists phone numbers.
  • Your basic network configuration data including where to find relevant login information to restore your network.
5. Keep your plan updated and test it semiannually.
Once your plan is complete, take time to run through a few exercises with your staff (we recommend a test run a few times each year.) This will help you determine if your plan is still valid and the procedures make sense for your current business needs.

Fancy Holiday Facts To Share
Ever found yourself mingling at a holiday party with nothing to add to the conversation? Here are a few fancy holiday facts to share at your next event.
USPS on the go.
Did you know that the U.S. Postal Service delivers over 15 billion pieces of holiday mail and packages each year? That’s roughly 50 items per person in the U.S. delivered in November and December alone. According to the USPS, the busiest mailing and delivery days are December 14th and 21st. So, steer clear of the post office on these dates and join the 7 million online customers at www.usps.com to take care of postage for your last minute items.
Candy cane origins.
The first candy cane actually dates back to 1670. A choirmaster in Germany actually gave out sugar sticks bent into the shape of a shepherd’s crook during a holiday service. Today, nearly 2 billion candy canes are produced each year and about 90% of those are sold between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Holiday decorating may end in the ER.
It’s amazing this number isn’t higher, but an average of almost 6,000 people wind up in the hospital each year due to holiday decorating injuries. These blunders can sure wipe out your holiday cheer so stay safe this season.
Oh Christmas tree.
America’s national Christmas tree is located in The Ellipse near the White House in Washington, D.C., but it wasn’t always. After the death of two national trees at the capital, a lovely blue spruce was found in York, Pennsylvania. The tree was originally planted for Mrs. Myers in her front yard as a Mother’s Day gift. After 15 wonderful years and a height of 30 feet, it was transplanted by horticulturalists to our nations capital. President Jimmy Carter and his daughter were the first to light this new national tree in 1978.
